Pour Paintings  2000-2001

These works on canvas or bathtowels bring together abstract armatures on which representational images find a home. There are large areas of raw canvas, gessoed places elsewhere, pours, stains, screenprinting, and painted images ranging from personal or historic photography to "found" pop to art history (such as images of classical sculpture). I'm intrigued by the tension between these different modes of painting, pattern and history, in the same way that I look out of a plane window and consider how the constructs of our society, in the form of cities and roads and farm patterns, have been superimposed upon the landscape -- and perhaps in similar proportions: little clusters here and there, but tied together too in networks not unlike the iceberg-tipped icons on a computer desktop that, when clicked on, dive deep beneath the surface.
