Jack Balas, 1996; DEAD RECKONING (NAVIGATION); oil and acrylic on sewn canvas; 80" x 77";

NOTE: This painting was made by sewing strips of canvas together like a flag. There are eighteen individual oil paintings based on historic photographs from WWII and the Vietnam War, structured in a loose progression from induction and leisure to training, warfare and grief. The map-navigation notations include depth readings, tidal flows and course headings the include: EP=estimated position; MAG=magnetic; FIX as in taking a reading off of a visible landmark like a lighthouse; and DR for "dead reckoning," an educated guess as to where you are.
